Part one: A BASIC Knowledge of TMJ SYNDROME

The Origins of TMD/TMJ Syndrome

The Origins of TMD/TMJ Syndrome

TMD/TMJ Syndrome is a set of seemingly unrelated symptoms caused by reflexive steps of the muscles of biting and chewing. It comes from brain-muscle conditioning acquired by stress or trauma. Just like all conditioning problems, it could be altered with appropriate training, often without any requirement for other interventions -- but this kind of training is outside the scope of dentistry (though within the scope of medical somatic education).
The mouth muscles, like all of the the muscles of the human body, are susceptible to command by conditioned postural reflexes, that affect chewing as well as biting movements. The reason individuals don't go around slack-jawed as well as drooling, for example, is that the conditioned postural reflex causes the muscles of biting as well as chewing always to stay somewhat tensed, maintaining their jaws closed.
People's jaw muscles are usually pretty much tense, even when they are asleep -- but the norm is quite mildly tense -- just adequate to help keep the mouth closed and lips together.
The degree of tension folks hold is a question of conditioning.
